Per military records, he was a corporal in the 142 Regiment of the Pennsylvania Volunteers, Company B. He enlisted August 18, 1862 at Tyrone Mills (or Mt. Pleasant according to a different document) , Fayette County, PA. He was wounded in the left foot at Fredericksburg on Dec 13, 1862. Spend many months in the Armory Square USA General Hospital, Wash DC. Records indicate that he was discharged "near Washington DC" on May 29, 1865. Pension claim says he was wounded December 13, 1862; was treated from December 22, 1862 until about March 11, 1863 at the Armory Square Hospital, Wash DC; then at Fort Schuyler Hospital, New York from March 11, 1863 until September 23, 1863; discharged May 29, 1865 near Wash DC. Does not indicate that he returned to his unit after September 1863, but it does say differently. One pension record shows he was present for duty December 31, 1863. He was married in September 1865. Had he not returned to duty in September 1863, he would have probably had an earlier discharge date and would have probably been married earlier. By being in the hospital through the summer of 1863, he missed Gettysburg where his unit suffered great losses.
His pension claim states that he was "afflicted with rheumatism, heart disease, and dyspepsia to such an extent as to incapacitate him to perform manual labor. And that his ailments are not due to any vicious habits."
Pension records show his places of residence as:
- Westmoreland County, PA to 1870
- Carrol County, OH to 1872
- Westmoreland County, PA to 1876
- Allegheny County, PA to 1880
- Westmoreland County, PA to 1882

- Wayne County, OH to 1898
