    Text ABRAHAM S. WALTER

The grandfather of Abraham S. Walter, of East Huntingdon township, was Peter Walter, who came from Lebanon county, Pennsylvania, to Westmoreland county and settled near Latrobe, where he passed the remainder of his life.  He was a farmer, and he and his family were devout Christian people.  His children were:  George, Peter, John, Daniel, Joseph, mentioned hereafter; Elizabeth, Sarah and Catharine.  Peter Walter at the time of his death was about ninety years old.

Joseph Walter, son of Peter Walter, was born in Lebanon county, and was still a child when the family moved to Westmoreland county.  He made farming the business of his life, and after his marriage purchased the farm where his son Abraham S. now lives.  The property consisted of one hundred and ten acres, which he improved and cultivated successfully.  He was the owner of another farm of one hundred and twenty acres, and his success in thus accumulating property was entirely the result of his own efforts.  He was a member of the Church of God. Mr. Walter married Elizabeth Sherrick, and their children were:  Annie, who became the wife of I.H. Cottom, and is now deceased.  Mary, widow of D.M. Newcomer, and resides at Monessen.  Abraham S., mentioned hereafter; and Sarah Catharine, who died in childhood.  The mother of these children died in 1855, and the father passed away at the age of seventy-three.

Abraham S. Walter, son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Sherrick) Walter, was born February 7, 1849, on the farm where he now lives, and received his education in the public schools.  His career as a farmer began on the homestead, and, with the exception of eighteen months during which he was engaged in the grocery business in Scottdale, he has always been a tiller of the soil.  His farm is situated three miles west of Scottdale, and on it he has made many valuable improvements, erecting his residence in 1883, and a fine barn in 1895.  He and his wife are members of the Church of God.  Mr. Walter has been twice married.  His first wife, to whom he was united in 1878, was Rebecca , daughter of James Hutchinson.  Her death occurred in 1886 and in 1888 Mr. Walter married Pearl, daughter of Thomas M. Gallatin, of East Huntingdon township, by whom he is the father of one child, William Ellsworth.
